Decorative Concrete - The Beginnings

By Delmar Germyn Concrete has been used in construction as a building material and as a decorative medium for over 2000 years. When the Romans discovered how to make their own stone it soon became used for both building and in beautification projects. The advantages are obvious it is easy to use, does not have the transportation problems that where faced when moving huge pieces of rock to the construction site. Concrete could be cast in place. Small objects where cast in molds and then placed where the architect wanted them. This revolutionized construction. It also made it possible for the average citizen to build his own house with rocks or manufactured bricks. He now had a way to hold them together. He could use mortar, a close relative of concrete. Concrete is cast in many ways: in small plastic molds, and huge steel forms. It is the medium of choice for some artists. Some of the work done by them is stunning to say the least. Others cast concrete and then sculpt it, creating beautiful individualized pieces. You have seen it alongside highways. In the old days it was there to serve a purpose and no attempt was made to make it look like anything but a concrete wall. Now it still has a purpose but is made to look good as well. This is done with steel forms that have a design built into them. Like a big mold! Depending on climate and more important the budget some of these walls are even colored. They can have the color added to the concrete or be painted or stained after the form is removed. This makes an attractive looking wall instead of an ugly cement abutment. One thing that has been noticed by municipalities and others that have started to use this method is that graffiti is not appearing as quickly and if it does it is in nowhere near the volume as when the big flat surface was presented! Maybe it is too hard to paint on? Copyright 2005 Delmar Germyn. All rights reserved. At-A-Glance Wedding Planner Checklist

By Jeanette Pollock So you two are getting married? Why not do everything you can to make it a wedding to remember? Here are the items you will want to consider carefully while formulating your wedding plans: Secular or Non-secular? Decide whether you want a simple civil ceremony or a church-affiliated wedding. This should be a straightforward decision, but if you run into a snag on this point, don't worry; you can work it out. It'll just be the first of many compromises! If you want a church wedding, make an appointment to talk to the church representative that handles such things and go from there. Money Weddings cost money. It's one of a handful of life-changing events, and an investment to make it everything you ever wanted it to be is appropriate. Talk it over. Come up with a dollar figure and start gathering estimates. Once you two have decided how much you want to spend, however, don't go over that amount. This is the first big investment you'll make, and you want it to be a pleasant one. Get Informed Make your list of "must-haves," such as wedding gown, invitations, flowers, rings and reception. Then call for estimates on each of those items. If your estimates total less than your wedding budget, you can go on to items on your second-tier list, your "wanna-haves." This list would include such items as a hairdresser, a photographer, a stag night, a hen party and professional music, both for the wedding ceremony and the reception. The Moment You've Waited For Did you forget the honeymoon? Not likely! You may look at the costs you've racked up on paper so far and despair, thinking you'll only have money left over for a night at the bowling alley! If that's the case, go back over all your lists and prune. Or give yourselves more time to save the money you'll need to create your perfect experience. The honeymoon, after all, is the consummation of the marriage. Make it a time to remember forever. Bon voyage! Jeanette Pollock is a freelance author and website owner. She publishes articles and reports in various ezines and also contributes on a regular basis to FreeNetPublishing.com. Wedding Shoes: Ensure You Have The Right Image!

By Lesley-Ann Graham Wedding items often left to the last minute are the shoes. This can be a major mistake as some styles can be difficult to find. Let's not even talk about the size and fit! Things to keep in mind is that the shoes you choose should be both great looking and comfortable. Keep in mind that there's a lot of walking and standing to be done at your wedding. Hobbling is definitely not elegant and will definitely jar with your perfect image. For the grooms, the choice is more restricted compared to the women. A good choice would be patent leather shoes or low-cut ones. They will look both elegant and smart with your suit. For the brides, keep your dress in mind when you choose. A simple gown would call for a simple shoe, while a more elaborate gown would allow for a more embellished shoe. There are a whole lot of designs to choose from. Would boots or slingbacks look better with your dress? How about a pair of pumps? Another thing to keep in mind is the heel of the shoe. You might look great in really high heels but how will you feel after almost two hours in them, carrying a ton of weight in your gown and train? You might end up in pain which is not a good way to celebrate your special day. Maybe an elegant pair of wedding slippers after a pedicure will do the trick, and the pampering feels great. No matter what kind of shoes you choose, it's always a great idea to break them in before the big day. Wear them for at least a week to really get used to them and have them form properly to your foot. This way there'll be no blisters marring your special day. Same Day Flower Delivery Services

By Eddie Tobey Flowers make classic gifts for every occasion. The importance of any special occasion is enhanced with wishes accompanied by the fragrance of beautiful and fresh flowers. There are many florists who promptly cater to the needs of the customers. They have a network of florists who make same day delivery of flowers possible. They sometimes deliver flowers directly from the fields. Some of the floral companies guarantee the delivery of flowers within three hours of placing the order. They have arrangements to hand deliver the exotic floral arrangements. Some of the companies do not charge extra for same day delivery of flowers, while others do charge a fee. The same-day delivery service is also subject to the place where the recipient lives. The proximity to the suppliers and the competition among the florists to provide the best customer service plays a major role in determining the price. There are certain exceptions, as same day delivery of flowers is possible only within certain countries. The order has to be placed within a stipulated time and is depends on the time zones of the different countries. If the stipulated time is 12 noon in the country from where the flowers are to be delivered, the order has to be placed according to the time zone of that country. This is applicable only in case of weekdays. If the same day delivery order is placed on the weekend, the order is not guaranteed. Similarly, on Sundays, the same day delivery of flowers is not assured. Despite the exceptions, the companies strive to provide the best customer services. They address the requirements of the customers as early as possible and guarantee the supply of fresh, fragrant and beautiful flowers to loved ones. Pros and Cons of Payday Loans

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Andrew_Bermam]Andrew Bermam Short term instant loans are known as payday loans. These are cash advances that are to be returned with interest on payday. Within a few minutes of applying online the loan will be approved and you will have the cash within a couple of hours. All it needs is your name, address, and bank details. Most often, the people who advance these loans do not perform a credit check. There are several online sites like www.personalcashadvance.com/ that advance up to USD 500 instantly. Also known as cash advance or post-dated check loans, the borrower can write out a check that can be cashed in on payday and avail the amount the check is for immediately. To get this instant cash the charge for every USD 100 is about USD15 for 14 days only. Any delays means you need to pay the charges once again. There are both pros as well as cons to payday loans. These loans are at a high rate of interest and are being marketed aggressively through radio, television, direct mailing, and the World Wide Web. The plus points are: If you suddenly need cash for medical expenses or unforeseen emergencies, a payday loan is the fastest and easiest. In a financial crunch, a payday loan can help you pay immediately pending bills so that your credit report remains unblemished. The paper work is simple and all they require is you name, address, and bank account information. The procedure for obtaining a payday loan is simple. The disadvantages are: You can avail only small amounts. There are limits, some states permit as much as USD 1000 while in others the maximal permissible is USD 300-400. If you do not pay exactly in 14 days and need to take an extension then you may land up paying USD 60 for a loan of USD 100. Payday loans are not recommended if you need a large loan or are unable to pay the amount back quickly. Although payday loans enable you to access money quickly, in fact, the rate of interest charged is quite high. In fact, long term credit rates are more affordable. Often, the terms and conditions may not be clear and you may land up paying finance charges twice or thrice especially if you allow the amounts to be deducted from your salary itself. You must specify that you want the whole amount of the payday loan deducted not just 25% or so. A payday loan is actually a cash advance against you next months earnings or salary. And, today you can apply for a payday loan by fax or email. It is quick, easy, and instant and will help you tide over a tight situation. However, it is important to avoid rollovers as this is a debt trap. Take a payday loan only if you are sure you can return the whole amount as soon as you get paid. As always even in the case of payday loans you must know who offers the best. Sites like www.abcloanguide.com/ give links to payday loan providers; this offers you the convenience of checking out what your options are. Great Salary Negotiation Tips

By Nathan Newberger 11 Commandments For Smart Negotiating 1 - BE PREPARED. The more information you have about your market value and the prospective employer, the greater your likelihood of success. This is the first commandment because it's the most important. There's a wealth of information available on the Internet, at the public library and through professional associations and networking groups. Time spent learning how to negotiate and preparing for negotiations may be the best investment you'll ever make. 2 - RECOGNIZE THAT EMPLOYMENT NEGOTIATIONS ARE DIFFERENT. When the negotiations are over, you'll have to work with the person with whom you're negotiating. Moreover, your future success may depend on that person. So, while you want to negotiate the best possible deal, you need to do so in a way that doesn't damage your image. At the same time, the employer's primary concern isn't negotiating the least expensive compensation package it can get away with. Rather, their focus will be on getting you to accept the job. 3 - UNDERSTAND YOUR NEEDS AND THOSE OF THE EMPLOYER. To be successful in this type of negotiation, you need to examine your priorities. What do you really want? Are you comfortable with a low salary and a large equity stake? Are you able to handle dramatic swings in income from year to year? Understanding your needs will also help you determine the type of company you want to work for. For example, a family-owned company may be able to offer a competitive salary and a large bonus based on results, but may not be willing to offer significant equity to a non-family member. A start-up company, on the other hand, may not be able to offer market salary, but will typically offer stock options. By recognizing what an employer can and can't do, you'll be able to determine what issues you should press. 4 - UNDERSTAND THE DYNAMICS OF THE PARTICULAR NEGOTIATIONS. Sometimes you'll have skills that are in great demand. And sometimes, you may be one of several qualified candidates the company would be happy to hire. Sizing up the situation and understanding the relative position of each party will help you determine when to press your advantage and when to back off. 5 - NEVER LIE, BUT USE THE TRUTH TO YOUR ADVANTAGE. It's not only wrong to lie, but in employment negotiations, it's ineffective. If you lie during negotiations, sooner or later you're likely to be caught. Once you are, even if you don't lose the offer, you'll be at a tremendous disadvantage, and your credibility will always be suspect. On the other hand, total candor wont be rewarded. You're under no obligation to blurt out everything you know. You can determine what you want to say and how you want to say it, and try to put everything in its most positive light. One key element of your preparation should be to recognize areas of concern so you can rehearse how to handle them when they inevitably come up. 6 - UNDERSTAND THE ROLE FAIRNESS PLAYS IN THE PROCESS. The guiding principle for most employers when negotiating is fairness. Within the constraints of their budget and organizational structure, employers usually will agree to anything that's fair and reasonable to hire someone they want. Appeals to fairness are your most powerful weapon. Thus, you should be able to justify every request you make in terms of fairness. For example, if other computer programmers in similar companies are being given sign-on bonuses, you should expect to be treated no differently. Your prospective employer will want you to accept it's offer and feel that you've been treated fairly. Understanding the importance of fairness as a negotiating principle can make the difference between success and failure. 7 - USE UNCERTAINTY TO YOUR ADVANTAGE. The more information you convey to a potential employer about your bottom line, the more likely it will limit what you get. Before making an offer, a company typically tries to determine what it will take for you to accept the position. With that information, the prospective employer will be able to determine the minimum package it needs to offer. While they may not offer you as little as they can get away with, if you've divulged too much information, they likely wont offer you as much as they might have otherwise. By not disclosing exactly what your current compensation is or exactly what it would take to get you to leave your job, you'll force a potential employer to make it's best offer. 8 - BE CREATIVE. Consider the value of the total package. Look for different ways to achieve your objectives. Be willing to make tradeoffs to increase the total value of the deal. If you're creative, you can package what you want in ways that will be acceptable to the company. You'll also be able to find creative "trades" that allow you to withdraw requests that might be problematic to the company in return for improvements in areas where the company has more flexibility. That way, you can maximize the value of the package you negotiate. 9 - FOCUS ON YOUR GOALS, NOT WINNING. Too often in negotiations, the act of winning becomes more important than achieving your goals. And it's also important not to make your future boss feel as if he's lost in the negotiations. You'll have gained little by negotiating a good deal if you alienate your future boss in the process. 10 - KNOW WHEN TO QUIT BARGAINING. The one sure way to lose everything you've obtained is to be greedy. There comes a point in every negotiation when you've achieved everything you could have reasonably expected to gain. While most companies will want to treat you fairly and make you happy, few companies want a to hire a prima donna. Being perceived as greedy or unreasonable may cause the deal to fall apart. Even if it doesn't, you'll have done immeasurable harm to your career. This brings us to the 11th and most important commandment: 11 - NEVER FORGET THAT EMPLOYMENT IS AN ONGOING RELATIONSHIP. Job negotiations are the starting point for your career with a company. Get too little and you're disadvantaged throughout your career there; push too hard and you can sour the relationship before it begins. Understanding these principles will allow you to effectively negotiate the terms of your new job. Then do your job well and continually seek out new challenges. As you take on added responsibilities and learn new skills, there will be opportunities to negotiate further improvements. How To Ask The Right Questions Upfront That Will Get You The Right Date For You

By Gregg Hall So, you'd heard of online dating services and were skeptical at first. After going out to bars and clubs and not meeting anyone, you decided to go ahead and give it a shot. You researched and found the most popular sites and signed up with a few of them to make sure that no stone was left unturned. You carefully crafted your profile, so that it was an honest reflection of you. No sense in lying, you're a nice guy and certainly worthy of a nice girl. You had your sister take a couple of pictures of you, because you know she'd make sure they would come out showing you in the best light and uploaded them. Now comes the moment of truth. You carefully go through the profiles, looking for women that meet your requirements. You're ready to make contact, but you don't know what to say. It's different talking to a girl in a bar. Especially after having a few drinks. Now you feel like you're writing a love letter to the girl who sat in front of you in the seventh grade. Then, doubts begin to set in. What if her profile doesn't accurately describe her? Maybe she just wants a man to take care of her or her personality is not as she presents it. Don't be afraid my friend. By asking the right questions, you will be able to determine if this is a woman that you truly want to go out with. The first question that you should ask is what she feels are the mistakes that other men who are on the site have made. Pay close attention to her answer and see if what she says makes sense or if she has unreasonable expectations of men. This will be a big clue as to how well you will get along with her and whether or not she will be able to get along with you. The next question to ask is how she feels about online dating in general. This will give her the opportunity to voice any bad experiences she might have had. By listening to her, you will learn how to avoid making these same mistakes. This knowledge will help you with subsequent women that you correspond with as well. The last and possibly biggest question to ask is how her last relationship ended. If she tells you that it was all her fault and that she broke her ex's heart, thank her for her time and move on to the next woman on the list. If she says it was all his fault and that nothing he did was right, ditto. Move on. Chances are nothing you do will be right either. If she responds that it wasn't really anyone's fault that the two of them just didn't want to be together any more, bingo! Feel free to pursue her. By simply asking the right questions, you've got a much better chance of finding the woman that's right for you. Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Florida. History of Crochet 1500 BC - 1820

By K. Perry Little is known of crochets early history. It seems likely that the earliest crochet was made using fingers, rather than the hooks used today. There are theories that crochet could have existed as early as 1500 BC, as part of nuns work, which included needlepoint lace and bobbin lace. There are three main theories for the origin of crochet. Some believe that it originated in Arabia and spread eastward to Tibet and then westward to Spain, finally following the Arab trade routes to other Mediterranean countries. Alternatively, its thought to have originated in South America, where a primitive tribe used crochet adornments in puberty rites. Another alternative stems from the fact that in China, early examples were known of dolls worked in crochet. However, there is no solid evidence as to how old crochet is or where it originated. The evidence of it appearing in the sixteenth century is slight, and hotly disputed. There are references to a type of "chained trimming" made around 1580. However this appears to have been a type of cord, sewn onto fabric like an ornamental braid. During the Renaissance, women crocheted several strands of thread producing fabrics similar to lace. The earliest evidence of crochet, as we know it, is first commonly seen in the second half of the eighteenth century. Crochet may have developed from Chinese needlework, an ancient form of embroidery known in Turkey, India, Persia and North Africa, which reached Europe in the eighteenth century, and was referred to as tambouring. The main theory behind the origin of crochet seems to be that it began when it was realized that chains worked in a pattern would hang together without background fabric. At the end of the eighteenth century, tambour evolved into what the French called crochet in the air, when the background fabric was discarded and the stitch worked on its own. Tambour hooks were as thin as sewing needles, and therefore the work must have been done with very fine thread. Crochet began to emerge in Europe in the early nineteenth century, boosted by Mlle Riego de la Branchardiere, well known for her ability to take needle and bobbin lace designs and turn them into crochet patterns that could be duplicated. She published numerous patterns and also claimed to have invented lace-like crochet, today called Irish crochet. A type of lace called cheyne lace was made with a hook from the late eighteenth century and a primitive form of crochet called pjonting can be found from about 1820. Helping Learning Disability Students Head To College

By Michael Russell More and more of today's high school students who struggle with a learning disability are not letting that keep them back, but are heading off to college in spite of their disability. There are several steps of preparation that students who have learning disabilities can take to make the transition from high school to college as smooth as possible. These preparations start in high school. First, students who have learning disabilities need to work on developing self knowledge while in high school. They need to understand what learning style works best for them. They need to have an arsenal of learning strategies in hand that they know will allow them to achieve success in school. Such strategies might include asking for extra time to take tests, listening to books read out loud instead of reading them, or making up acronyms to help them remember important material. Next, the learning disabled student needs to understand the legal rights that he or she is entitled to. The Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA), which was passed in 1990, protects the confidentiality of records, so colleges do not have access to any disability records. Because of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act, colleges cannot discriminate in accepting students with learning disabilities. Students with learning disabilities have to be allowed reasonable modifications in order to complete their education, such as extra time for tests, alternate test forms and other things. One difference at college over high school is the student must take the initiative to request help when at college. In high school, the law demands that the school identify and help LD students, but not so in college. Students with learning disabilities need to make special preparation for the transition into collage life. Students need to be aware of the options they have for college. Some colleges have open admission policies, which allow anyone with a high school diploma to enter the college. Others have selective criteria and may only accept students with a certain GPA or test score. There are also two types of colleges based on the length of the education. Two-year colleges usually have open admissions policies and allow the student to earn an Associates Degree. These are sometimes referred to as Community Colleges. Four-year colleges or universities are often more selective in their admissions acceptance and offer more specialized degrees. Some colleges have programs designed for students with learning disabilities. Those with severe learning disabilities should seek one of these institutions. Just because a student has a learning disability does not mean that he or she cannot and should not pursue higher education. The law demands reasonable accommodation for those with LD at colleges and universities. LD students who are planning to go to college need to have a good understanding of their own learning strategies and what helps them learn best. By doing some research and planning well for the transition, even students with learning disabilities can succeed and even thrive in the college setting.
