Garden Heating the Traditional Way

By Jenny Edwards With the increased new trend in outdoor living, which has undoubtedly been by TV Gardening DIY programs, we are all spending more money on our garden and patio areas. Creating an inspirational outdoor living space is something we can all do with a wide range of hard and soft landscaping products, lighting, decorations and garden accessories available widely on the market. Some of the latest innovations are in garden heating which allows us to spend more of our precious leisure time enjoying our garden or patio area, be it for entertaining family and guests or simply for relaxing. Fire pits and fire baskets are now widely available and not only bring the real flame, cosy atmosphere to your garden or patio but also create a great amount of heat, light and ambience. Traditionally fire baskets were sued as far back as the days of the Roman Empire as a form of heating for castles, manor houses and great stone buildings. Firepits are a more modernist refined and classy form of the original fire basket; however both have their own charms. Fire baskets and fire pits are simply filled with wood logs which are lit. They give off quite a lot of light, but more importantly their heat output is very high. They give the user a similar feel and create an ambience similar to sitting around a camp fire. The actual flame and glow of the fire are enough to make the user feel warm and cosy. You make more use of your garden and patio areas at night by using fire pits and fire baskets to warm up the whole area. Fire pits usually come with a steel mesh fire guard to stop sparks and embers from flying around, however the more traditional fire basket has gaps in between the steel which hold the logs. To counteract the fact that some embers will drop onto the floor below the fire basket, nearly all will come supplied with a ground tray to collect the ash and embers. The ash and embers in a fire pit simply collect within the bowl for easy disposal. They are a really great way to add charm, elegance, ambience, light and heat to any garden or patio area and are easy to use and maintain. Fire baskets are usually powder coated so they wont rust very easily. Fire pits come in either black powder coated bowls, solid copper bowls or stainless steel bowls, all of which sit on powder coated steel leg frames which are removable. The heat output for fir pits does not reduce or alter with the different bowl finishes, however placing the safety mesh guard over the top (for obvious safety reasons) will slightly reduce heat output. Some fire baskets are available with a steel barbecue mesh tray which sits on the top of the fire basket. This gives the fire basket a dual use for cooking as well as a formidable heat source. When choosing a fire pit or fire basket always takes into consideration the size of your garden or patio area. It is important to remember that you will probably want access around the fir pit or fire basket, so choose the right sized item, bearing this in mind. Care and maintenance of fire pits is very simply, although they can be left outside all year round it is highly recommended that the copper and stainless steel firepits are give a light coating of oil at the end of the summer season so that they retain their lustre. Covers are available and will have the obvious impact of lengthening the life of a fire pit. Powder coated fire baskets can be left outside in the garden or patio and wont rust, however steel fire baskets should be given a light coat of oil. If rust does appear on a steel finished fire basket, then this can be removed by using a wire brush, and then a light oiling should be applied. Always ensure that if oiling these items, only a light thin coat is applies. Fire pits and fire basket really are the cutting edge of outdoor living and life style this year. It is anticipated that they will be one of the biggest selling garden accessories and heat sources for this season, so if you want to enjoy your garden for longer when the sun goes down, they are a must for you. Enjoy long nights throughout the year with your fire pit or fire basket your life will take a new turn into outdoor living. Jenny Edwards is the operations manager of Arboreta Home & Garden Store. Avoid Commont Fitness Pitfalls

By Lynn Bode While exercising isnt complicated, its very easy to make mistakes. Often times the mistakes are made because of lack of proper technique training or simply due to rushing to get the workout completed. Regardless of the reason for the mistakes, they can lead to injuries or at the very least be counter-productive to your fitness goals. Of course its important to know specifically what to do to be successful at meeting your health and fitness goals but it is also crucial to understand what not to do. So take note of the following common mistakes and how to avoid them. These tips will help ensure your workout time is effective and help prevent injuries. Too Much, Too Soon Many new exercisers try to lose weight or tone up too quickly, by exercising too frequently or trying exercise programs that are too difficult for their fitness level. Be sure to start with an exercise plan that takes your current fitness regimen (or lack of) into account. Pie In The Sky Goals Despite what many advertisers would like you to believe, its unrealistic to think you can lose 30 pounds in 30 days or that you can have Hollywood abs simply by doing 10 minutes of crunches a day. Its good to set goals but be sure they arent too aggressive and realize its okay to periodically re-define them. Ignoring Expert Advice Its always advisable to consult your physician before starting an exercise program. Working with a fitness professional is also a good idea so you can learn proper technique, the latest fitness information and learn how to avoid injuries. Over-Exercising If you start to feel overwhelmed, neglect important daily activities in order to workout or repeatedly get injured, then it might be due to exercising too frequently. Realize the importance of balance and that more is not always better. Consider reducing the frequency of your workouts or the intensity of some of them and periodically resting for a few days or a week. Improper Breathing Sure, breathing is an involuntary bodily function; something that most individuals tend to ignore. But, breathing correctly during fitness sessions is very important. Incorrect breathing can lead to lack of oxygen and even faintness. When working out ensure that you dont breathe too shallowly and try to breathe through the nose and out the mouth. Selecting The Wrong Size Choosing the proper weight size when strength training is trickier then it sounds. Lifting weights that are too heavy for you can lead to improper form and ultimately to injuries. Use weights that are too light and the exercise session can be ineffective. If possible consult a fitness trainer to determine the correct amount of weight for your size, strength and goals. A trainer can also help you develop a plan for safely progressing forward on weight sizes. Not Staying Hydrated Drinking enough water on a daily basis is important. When you exercise you need to consume even more water. You should drink 16 ounces for every hour of exercise you complete. Plus you should try to consume 1-2 cups of water about 30 minutes before you begin working out. Eating Too Little No, thats not a typo. Not eating enough can be as detrimental as eating too much. When the body is not fed consistently, it goes into a starvation mode. Five to six smaller meals evenly spaced throughout the day helps keep the metabolism running smoothly. Just be sure to control portion size. Hanging Out Instead Of Working Out Just showing up at the gym is not going to help you get more fit. Socializing while leaning on a weight machine wont build muscles. Its important to enjoy your exercise time but make sure that the focus remains on physical activity. Fixating On The Scale If you think the scale doesnt lie, consider this. Many professional athletes would be considered obese based on their weight alone. Look at the bigger and more relevant picture. Monitor your body fat percentage, if possible. Otherwise track measurements. Also dont underestimate the importance of improved physical and mental well-being. Beading Basics: What You Need to Know to Get Started Beading

By Jamie Jefferson Stringing beads is a fun way to reduce stress and explore your creative side. Put a colorful necklace together or create a beautiful matching set with a bracelet and a pair of earrings. Wear your creations, sell them, or wrap them in tissue paper and give them to your friends. Basic beading is easy, fun, and relatively inexpensive. Youll find beading supplies at most craft shops, art supply stores, and discount stores, in addition to the beading boutiques that often specialize in more expensive beads. Here is a checklist of the basic tools and supplies youll need to begin working on your new hobby: Beads You’ll find an abundance of different sizes, shapes and styles to choose from. Start off with a few favorite colors using plastic beads so you can become familiar with color coordination and putting on the finishing touches. This way, mistakes wont be so costly. Work your way toward the finer glass, semi-precious, hand-painted, wood and cloisonn beads. Clasps There is a wide variety of clamps, closures and clasps, also called findings. Again, dont be seduced into purchasing the best and the brightest in the beginning. Most products will have the instructions included on the front or back of the package, but if you run into a problem, consult a beading magazine or catalog, which you can find either online or at craft shops. Containers Depending on your budget and preference, you can use either the standard, flat containers or go up a notch to the drawer compartments that many people use in their workshops for nuts, bolts and screws. Any containers will do, but, while working, youll want your beads to be easily accessible. Storing beads in dark, confined areas makes them more difficult to work with and to color-coordinate. Crimping Beads These are an important element in bead-making. They are simply beads constructed of a flexible metal, which help keep the clasp attached to the necklace. Crimping beads come in gold and silver and in several different sizes. Round-Tipped Pliers Invest in a good pair of round-tipped pliers. Youll need to use them often not only for picking up beads but also to hold the components while working with them. Flat-nosed pliers also come in handy. Remember to select a pair that will allow you to crimp. Trays or Boards Using a beading tray is not mandatory but it makes it easier to pre-select and measure your beads. Most trays are made of plastic and incorporate a measuring device either in inches, millimeters, or both. Wire, Line or String Again, depending on budget and preference, there is a wide variety of wire, line and string to choose from. Before purchasing, be sure that its the correct size to fit the beads youve selected, or vice versa. Some beads have large holes to accommodate thick string while others, such as seed beads, have tiny holes that only thread or wire will fit through. You could even use fishing line to practice on, but beading wire is better it doesnt have a tendency to curl, shrink and distort the way plastic lines do. You could also use string, rawhide or thread. When beading with string or thread, use a special big-eye or curved needle. Children can also take part in stringing beads. Look for childrens beading supplies at most craft stores, generally alongside the adult supplies. Beading is a great way to teach children coordination skills, and to keep them happy and occupied while you are working on your beading projects. Keep in mind that many of these items should be kept away from babies and small toddlers. Bead supply warehouses will often send color catalogs by request, listing hundreds of different products, along with accompanying images. Or you may want to subscribe to a beading magazine where youll learn different techniques and methods used by professionals. Check online or at your local craft store for lots of great, free beading patterns and beading ideas. Once youve mastered the art of beading, youll be making attractive jewelry, and you’ll naturally gravitate to other beading projects. You may even start to decorate your handbags, create charming wall art, and make lovely bookmarks, sun-catchers, key chains or plant holders. There are so many amazing things you can do with beads, youll wonder what ever took you so long to discover them. Simple & Plain or Fairytale Wedding?

By Emily Tanner Nowadays, everyone seems to be outdoing each other and when it comes to wedding planning this is no exception. Brides are always looking for the biggest or the most expensive dress or the gown with the most crystals on it. Many celebrities are in fierce competition with each other when it comes to the length of their train, the cost of the wedding, the number of groomsmen, the size of the bouquet and so on. So, in this crazy world of ‘bigger is better’ how can you outdo other brides when it comes to wedding party favours? The market for wedding favour gifts is a real growth industry and increasing all the time. This is great news for future brides as it means they can be choosy when it comes to selecting their wedding party favours. Brides are very particular when it comes to organising their wedding - and so they should be. After all, they have been planning it in their heads since they were 5 years old! Brides vary hugely; we all know brides who have meticulously planned every minute details and we all know brides who - 2 months before the wedding - haven’t even got their dress! However, when it comes to the theme of the wedding, the colours and ideas all need to blend well together. This is especially the case when it comes to laying the reception tables including the wedding favour gifts. Wedding party favours have the ability to tie all your ideas in together and are fundamentally the linchpin that ties up all the loose ends. In other words, if your wedding is simple, plain, classy and elegant, you will want to keep your wedding party favours to this theme. In which case, an ivory square box with an embossed lid will look sensational finished with ivory satin tying ribbon and a clear/silver wired jewel spray. If you are pulling out all the stops and are having a fairytale wedding that every girl dreams of, then your wedding favour gifts must also reflect this extravagance. The wedding party favours really need to a talking point for your guests and so go for a glossy black cubetto with red organza woven edge tying ribbon and - the piece de resistance - a gold fabric heart. Knight in Shining Armor Syndrome

By Lucia Demasi Unless you just came out of a coma, you know that the late Anna Nicole Smiths ex-boyfriend is Larry Birkhead. He has been in the news since he announced he was the father of Dannielynn. One interviewer asked him why he continued to stay in the relationship despite Anna Nicoles drug use. He said he thought he could save her. He had knight in shining armor syndrome. In her book, Why We Love author Helen Fisher states that: millions of years of protecting and providing for women has bred into the male brain this tendency to choose women they feel they need to save. What separates man from animal is his ability to think and reason. Just because it may be natural for men to be chivalrous, it doesnt mean they cant place a limit on just how far they will go. Should they open a door, pull out a chair, take a womans hand when crossing the street or give her their jacket if shes cold? Absolutely. Should they try to save a woman whose life is a mess? They do so at their own peril. Men try to save damsels in distress because it makes them feel powerful, in control and manly. Sometimes they are afraid of women and think they wont be rejected if they fix a womans problems. They hide their inadequacies behind what looks like strength. They know they dont have their act together, so instead of working on themselves theyd rather work on someone else. Such relationships are doomed to fail. If these men really were strong, they would not be trying to save someone that appears to be a victim. They dont realize that aside from a few circumstances beyond ones control (acts of God, accidents, disease, etc.) ones position in life is based on who they are on the inside, not someone or something out there. There is an axiom that says: There are no victims, only volunteers. Knights believe that if the woman gets better, shell become the perfect girlfriend. The only problem is that if she does become healthy, she will not want to be with someone who is so flawed that he tolerated being with a broken-winged bird. Healthy people do not want to be with unhealthy people. On the other hand, if she doesnt get better, the man will never have the perfect girlfriend because he wont get his needs met. In addition, his fears of an intimate relationship will not be repaired by staying with an inadequate woman. Its a no-win situation. Why else do men choose damsels in distress? According to Dr. Laura in her book, Ten Things Men Do To Mess Up Their Lives other reasons for stupid chivalry are: guilt for past transgressions and lifestyles, feelings of real or imagined inadequacies, fear of the pain of abandonment, loneliness, ego aggrandizement, fears about womens (aka Moms) approval and acceptance and a fragmented sense of masculinity. If youre currently trying to be a knight in shining armor, whats your reason? Just because a man doesnt acknowledge that a woman is responsible for her circumstances, it doesnt mean those same circumstances wont come back to bite him in the butt at some future date. Larry Birkheads life is now chaotic as the result of trying to save a woman whose life was chaotic. Would you want to be in his shoes? Lucia is a dating and relationship expert, columnist, lecturer and host of the TV Show “The Art of Love”. With over 20 years experience on the relationship market, Lucia has dated men of all nationalities in six cities, four countries and two continents. Her practical know-how makes her the perfect candidate to dispense relationship advice after all, in almost every dating dilemma she has been there, done that and lived to tell about it.
