Fit Teens Become Healthy Adults

By Gabe Mirkin, M.D. A study from Finland shows that teenagers who are out of shape are at increased risk for having high blood pressure later in life (International Journal of Sports Medicine, Volume 26, 2005). In 1976, a group of teenagers ran 1.2 miles as fast as they could. Twenty-five years later, the faster runners had far lower blood pressures than the slower runners. The data was corrected for body fat, so weight gain would not explain the higher blood pressures in the slower runners. High blood pressure increases risk for death from heart attacks, strokes, kidney damage, and diabetes. The ability to run long distances fast depends on training, so the faster teenagers were in better shape than the slower runners, and fit teenagers are far more likely than out-of-shape teenagers to exercise in later life. If you exercise regularly when you are young, you will be more likely to continue exercising regularly when you are older which can prolong your life. There are many other reasons to encourage your child to be active in sports. For example, college admissions officers look for students who excel in a specific skill or activity. A student who has an outstanding record in his or her sport will have an advantage over other students. Top athletes with average grades often are accepted at the finest universities. Why It's Good To Be Alone

By Lucia Demasi Have you noticed that theres an ebb and flow to everything in life? The sun comes up, the sun goes down; the tide comes in, the tide goes out. If youre not currently in a relationship, it simply means the sun has temporarily set; the tide is currently out. As sure as the sun will rise again and the tide will come back in, you will eventually be in another relationship. What you do between now and then may very well determine what type it will be and if it will be with the one. Unfortunately, todays society often assumes being alone equals loneliness. Nothing could be further from the truth. I spend a lot of time alone, but I am rarely lonely. I am very protective of my time and weigh the pros and cons of everything I do. You can always make more money, but you will never get back time youve wasted. The clock is ticking and no one knows how much time they have left. This is what makes life exciting. Instead of bemoaning the fact that you currently dont have someone special in your life, why not take the time to clear the weeds in your life. I bet theres a closet thats begging to be organized. There are probably things you dont need or use that can be sold or given away. Junk slowly accumulates in your life and before you know it, you feel overwhelmed. You may have heard that in order to bring new energy into your life (a partner, etc), you need to clear out the old energy. You certainly wont have the time to do it when you meet him or her, because youll be so high on love that you probably wont want to do much of anything except be with or think about your new honey. Dont fall into the trap of thinking that everyone in a relationship is happy. We have a saying in my native country of Italy, Meglio solo che mal accompagnato. This means, Its better to be alone than in bad company. The divorce rate being over 50%, I have to assume that at least 50% of the people in relationships are probably unhappy. When youre on the outside looking in, you think everyone is having a great time except you. Of course you know it isnt true. The human mind being what it is, we idealize what we dont have, and have a short term memory for all the bad times we went through when we had someone in our lives. I remember one Valentines Day, I was in a horrible relationship. I was looking for a card for him and saw one that said, To the man of my dreams. Man of my dreams! He was the man of my nightmares. Every time I think about him, I regret the years that I wasted with him, and even though it ended over 5 years ago, Im still so grateful that hes out of my life. Finally, please keep in mind that everyone is looking for the right person but few people concentrate on being the right person. Take this time to be honest with yourself and figure out what you need to do or change in order to become someone irresistible, the type of person everyone is looking for but is so hard to find. If you cant be honest with yourself, ask a close friend. Use this alone time to be the best that you can be, because before you know it, youll be in another relationship, and if youve done your homework, youll never be alone again! Lucia is a dating and relationship expert, columnist, lecturer and host of the TV Show "The Art of Love". With over 20 years experience on the relationship market, Lucia has dated men of all nationalities in six cities, four countries and two continents. Saving Money Year Round

By Audrey Okaneko As moms, many of us want to stretch our incomes as far as we can. Id like to offer some ideas that have worked for me in saving money year round. 1. Check with your local newspaper and see if you can read the paper online. I am able to only subscribe to the Sunday paper in order to qualify for online access. I can read seven days per week but only pay for one. 2. We go to garage sales often. I can not count the number of times weve found something we needed, in almost perfect condition and at a fraction of the cost. 3. Either buy books at the used book store or rent them from the library. Used book stores sell books at of the cover price. They then buy them back at of the price. So, in essence you can get a book at of the cover price. We also buy books at garage sales. Often they are only 25 cents each. 4. Look into being a mystery shopper for restaurants. Pizza places are great. You can get a free pizza just for sharing your experience and taking notes about wait time, hold time etc. We recently ate at IHOP for free. The questionnaire took about 10 minutes to fill out. Please note there is NEVER, under any circumstances, a fee to become a mystery shopper. 5. Our local cable company charges about $50 to get more than the basic channels. If you add a movie channel, it goes up to about $70 per month. Why not order Blockbuster Online instead? For $18 per month, you can have 3 DVDs out at any time plus get a coupon to rent one more in the store every week. By the time you ship one back and get the next, youll always have DVDs to watch. You can rent both television shows and movies, eliminating the need for cable. 6. We do not have a long distance plan on our phone. Instead, we use prepaid phone cards. The per minute rate we are charged on our calling card is far less than the per minute rate if we add a long distance plan. 7. Commit to eating whats in the house for a week. When we do this, we are able to finish off cans of soup, cans of tuna, pasta, crackers and many other items with long shelf lives. You may need to buy meats, fruits and vegetables, but really make an effort to use everything in your pantry. Youll be surprised how much you can save by not buying new foods at the grocery store for a week. 8. Invest the time to examine what you pay for monthly. For example, are you paying for magazines you are not reading? Can you read them online? If you are saving a years worth of magazines for when you have time, save the money and buy it at the store when you really do have the time. Do you belong to a gym you are not using? Many people join a gym with good intentions, but if you are only working out once every three months, then saving the monthly fee and paying per use might be the way to go. 9. Plan out what gifts you will need for the next year. Shopping spur of the moment is always more costly. Buy gift items when they on sale and put them away. Birthdays, holidays and anniversaries come once each year. If you plan, youll save money. 10. Get credit card balances paid off. When you have a balance, you are charged interest on not only the old balance but also on any new purchase that you make. Take all of the money you have saved above and pay that credit card balance off. Once you begin applying these tips to everyday life, youll find you really can save money year round. Seven Secrets To Surviving An Immigration Audit

By Eli Kantor Recently, there has been a huge upsurge in workplace raids by Immigration in response to growing political pressure. Immigration is aggresively enforcing laws that are already on the books, which prohibit an employer from "knowingly" employing an unauthorized alien. This change was outlined in an April, 2006 memo, setting forth their new workplace enforcement strategy. Consequently, employers need to get ready now, so that they will be prepared when Immigration knocks on the door. Here are seven secrets to surviving an Immigration Audit: #1 Do An Internal I-9 Audit Now. Don't wait for Immigration to raid your workplace or to send you a letter demanding to inspect your I-9 Forms within 72 hours to first review them. Do it now. Compare your payroll with your I-9 forms and make sure that you have an I-9 Form for all employees. Make sure that they all have been filled out correctly and completely. #2 Centralize the I-9 Process. Train 1 or 2 employees in the technical process of filling out I-9 forms. Then have them always be in charge of completing the I-9's , instead of random supervisors, who may or may not be familiar with the process. #3 Do Not Put the I-9's in the Employee's Personnel file. Keep the I-9 forms in a separate file. You don't want to have to turn over your employee's personnel files to Immigration, since they contain privileged information. (You can put a copy of the I-9 in the employee's personnel file, if you want, but keep the originals separate.) #4 Always Examine the Original Documents - Not Copies. It is critical that you examine the original document, "green card", drivers license or social security card, not a copy. #5 Copy the Front and Back of All Documents that were Examined, and Attach to the I-9. Although employers are not legally required to make a photocopy of the documents that they examined, doing so, demonstrates the employer's good faith, and if questioned, the employer can point to what documents they relied upon, even if they ultimately prove to be fraudulent. #6 Establish a Written Policy that Fraud in the Employment Application Process, Will be Grounds for Termination. By doing so, the employer will clearly have the right to terminate an employee if it later discovers that he submitted fraudulent documents to obtain employment. #7 If you Receive a Social Security Mismatch Letter, Contact Your Attorney First, Before Responding. The Social Security Administration is sending thousands of Social Security Mismatch Letters to Employers, informing them that there is a "mismatch" in the names and social security numbers of some of the employer's employees. There may be serious legal consequences for the employer in this regard. Therefore, immediately contact experienced legal counsel before responding. Check Your Footprints

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Michael_Challiner]Michael Challiner Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the .. credit cards? Would you be surprised to hear that we lead the world the number of credit cards in circulation? There are around 74 million credit cards out there and outstanding balances add up to around 56bn. Not everyone pays the same rate of interest. Rates charged by lenders vary and you can be charged a higher APR (annual percentage rate) than those advertised. Some people may find it difficult to find credit from any source and risk being turned down if they apply for a mortgage. If youve been caught in this situation it would look as though youve been judged to be in the high risk category of would-be borrowers. When you apply for any form of credit, lenders check your borrowing (and repaying) record through one of the credit-reference agencies. A poor credit rating means youll struggle to arrange any form of finance. The reason for this poor rating could be as simple as having had no credit in the past. Lenders would have no information to base their judgement on. It could also be down to a reluctance to settle debts or as a result of a criminal record. Its also possible that a lender has made some sort of error on your record, for which youre suffering. Its possible to check your own credit file via a credit agency. It only costs around 2. An increasing number of people use this service on a regular basis. Recent reports of criminals stealing the identities of innocent people and running up debts are worrying and this self-check helps to confirm that alls well. There isnt one single rating used by all lenders. The information contained in an individuals file is taken by each lender and they make their own assessment of how safe it would be to offer credit. They use a system in which they award points depending on your previous credit record and your current circumstances. Lenders place importance on different aspects some might take the stance that if you hold three credit cards, all up to date and with a minimal number of missed repayments, then you have built up sufficient debt to rate a negative mark. Others would consider that you have shown that you can handle the cards sensibly and reward you with a positive rating. Credit agencies dont hold black lists of individuals. They simply give information to lenders for their own consideration. Each application for credit leaves what they call a footprint on your file. This stays on for a year. Too many footprints wont be looked on favourably by lenders. To get round this problem it is possible that if you are making a tentative enquiry regarding a quotation, make certain that his is classed as a quotation search and not a credit application one. A quotation search will not be recorded on your file. If, having checked out your records, you find a mistake has been made, it is important to contact the agency and inform them of the problem. They will make investigations and in the meantime will add a note to your file to show a dispute has been registered. You can also add a notice of correction of your own if you feel something has occurred which has created a misleading impression of your credit worthiness. A notice of disassociation can be placed on your file if a joint finance agreement has been made between yourself and a partner and you have subsequently split up. By keeping a check on your records and taking fast action if a mistake appears, youll leave clear and sharp footprints behind. Check it out. Find the Goldmine Within Your Business

By Joy Gendusa Doing a current customer breakdown can help you find the goldmine within your business by determining who you should be targeting in your marketing efforts in the future. There is a goldmine right there and you may or may not see itits your customer base! But is it all of them? No definitely not. Then what the heck am I talking about? You probably already have some great customers, probably not as many as you would like though. So how do you go about finding more of the kind of customers that make opening your doors worthwhile every day? The first step is to find out everything you can about the customers that you do have. Heres how to start: 1. Get Accurate Sales Numbers - How do you determine what a "good customer" is? More than likely it is a loyal customer who keeps coming back to spend money with your business. This is why the first step you take should be to determine how many sales each customer has and what total income each customer has provided you. 2. Decide What You Consider "Good" - Is your product or service a one shot deal? Or can your customers come back again and again? If they can come back, you'll want to find out their average order or purchase size in a dollar amount and also how many times they've purchased... You'll see that they'll fall into categories. Maybe 10% are big spenders but 30% purchase consistently. Obviously this will vary depending on what type of business you have. If you sell a product or service where it is unlikely your customer will need you again, figure out what range of purchase size makes up most of your income. It really varies from business to business. For instance, if you're a Realtor you may sell many more homes between 100 and 200 thousand, but most of your actual income came from one giant purchase... Maybe a 2 million dollar home... You don't want to ignore your bread and butter. In this case, I would recommend marketing to the bread and butter public. So you see, you really need to evaluate your industry. 3. Once you've determined which are the best customers (the kind youd like all the others to emulate) and have gotten all information concerning their purchasing habits with you: Find out how they found you, where they live, what they do for a living and even what their level of income is (if it can be tactfully worked into the conversation). Its good to get this information when the customers are making their purchase because they will be more likely to give it to you. If you keep customer phone numbers you could even do a short survey by phone to find out most of this info. 4. Look for Patterns - When you gather all of the information you may notice that 35% of your best customers are doctors, or 50% of them come from one area of the city. Whatever the pattern is that you notice, take advantage of it. Do specific mailings to a list that fits the same description as your best customers and you will attract more of them. A list company can find you a list that best fits so that you are mailing to those companies or individuals that are most likely to purchase. Follow these steps and you will be able to increase you Return On Investment (ROI) from all of your marketing programs. And remember, Return On Investment is how much income you are generating from the leads you get in from your direct mail marketing campaign. Marketing your business will help it grow, marketing your business to the right people can get your business booming. So, tap into your goldmine! What is the History of Metal Dectors? Find Out Now

By J C Christian It really is hard to believe that metal detectors have been around for much longer than many people know. It was towards the end of the 19th Century that many scientists and engineers began to use their growing knowledge of electrical theory in order to develop a machine which would pinpoint the exact location of metal. Certainly the use of such an instrument would provide a huge advantage to any miner who was looking for ore bearing rocks. Then a German physicist by the name of Heinrich Wilhelm Dove invented the induction balance system which was incorporated in to the production of metal detectors 100 years later. Many of the early metal detectors were crude and used a lot of battery power and they often only worked to a very limited degree. In fact Alexander Graham Bell used one in 1881 to try and locate the position of a bullet which was lodged in the back of the then American President James Garfield after his assassination. However, the real development of the modern metal detector began in the 1930's when Dr Gerhard Fischer produced a system for radio direction finding and was used to accurately navigate pilots around the world. Although this system worked extremely well there were some anomalies noticed by Dr Fischer when over terrain that carried ore bearing rocks or metal was placed close to the system. He therefore reasoned that it should be possible to design a machine which would detect metal using a search coil resonating at a particular radio frequency. So in 1937 he applied for and was granted the first patent for a metal detector. He soon found that his designs were being put to a more practical use as they were used to help detect mines during the Second World War. Although they were heavy, consisting of a vacuum tube and required separate battery packs they worked and after the war many of the surplus mine detectors that were on the market were being purchased by relic hunters who not only used them for fun but for profit as well and so the hobby of metal detecting was born. Soon more and more manufacturers were producing their own versions of the metal detector from the Oremaster Geiger Counter produced by Whites Electronics of California in the 1950's through to Charles Garrett who invented and produced the BFO (Beat Frequency Oscillator) metal detector (and Garrett's is still one of the world's leading designers of metal detectors today). But it was during the 1950's and 1960's because of the invention and development of transistors that many metal detector designers and manufacturers were able to make smaller lighter machines with improved circuitry and were able to run on much smaller battery packs. They were even reduced to a size that a child would able to handle easily and many did. In fact there was such a huge requirement for these early models that Companies sprang up not just in the USA but in Britain as well hoping to supply the growing demand. Even today the trend for metal detecting as a hobby still continues and the companies such as Garrett Metal Detectors and Fischer Metal Detectors are still producing new designs and models all the time. J C Christian is an avid follower of metal detectors and how metal detectors work. He runs an informational site that follows Garret Metal Detectors, Fisher Metal DetectorsFisher Metal Detectors, Tesoro Metal Detectors, and Kellyco Metal Detectors just to name a few. What To Know About Band Camps

By M. Xavier Band camps? What's a band camp? Unless you happen to play an instrument in High School or College, you may never have heard of a band camp or been aware that they are a booming business. Most band camps hold sessions during summer months, and are geared mostly for High School age students. It's also a place where students can mingle and learn from professional musicians, to play music that you've never played before, and of course, to enjoy new experiences and make new friends. Many college universities offer band camps for their music students, and can last anywhere from a week to two weeks or more. Band students are typically given a choice of staying on campus if they wish, or driving back and forth. Depending on the size of your wallet, that's a decision that each band member will have to make on his or her own. The cost of attending band camps also varies, depending on school, length of training session and whether or not you'll be staying on campus or commuting. In general, it can cost anywhere from $250 to $500, again, depending where you are and how long the session lasts. If you're interested in attending band camps, get online or ask school counselors if there are any band camps in your vicinity and then contact them for enrollment and application information. Many band camps focus on specific instruments, such as brass, drums, or reed instruments, so make sure you know what they offer before you sign on the dotted line. Some band camps take a limited number of participants, while others can easily handle fifty or more. For instance, brass band camps focus on the brass instruments, obviously, and offer instruction on small, medium or large groups of brass players for up to eight hours a day, six days a week. For some instruction, professional musical artists take groups of band members to focus on particular techniques. Attending band camps is no walk in the park. It's serious business to many High Schools and colleges and universities around the country, and they want to ensure that each student gets their money's worth, so don't expect too much free time. While some band camps are open to anyone over the sixth grade, most do cater to the older kids, so again, before signing up, make sure that there will be enough kids around your age group to make for a pleasant learning experience. Band camps are a great way to improve instrument-playing skills, as well as to learn how serious band competitions can be. Of course, attending band camps is a great opportunity to meet new people and make new friends that may last a lifetime. If you or your child is interested in playing an instrument for a school band, you may want to investigate band camps as an option that will help them become adept at their instrument. Band camps are more than worth the investment if it offers the chance to excel and compete at state and national levels. Still looking for the perfect summer camp? Fast Cash Loans - How They Work

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Carrie_Reeder]Carrie Reeder A payday loan allows you to receive a cash advance based on the expectation that when you are paid, you will pay the lender back. Finance fees vary between payday loan companies, so it is best to investigate several lenders before filling out an application. Once approved, you can receive your money within hours. Then you just repay your loan on your next payday to avoid any financial problems. Find A Lender Before you fill out an application, you should start by comparing lenders. You can easily find information on lenders sites. Look for the lowest finance fees and best terms. On average you can expect to pay $15 for every $100 advanced. You can borrow up to $1000, but the typical amount is between $200 and $300. Your states laws will dictate how much you can borrow and the terms. The Application With online payday loan lenders, you dont have to worry about paperwork. You simply provide your contact information, income level, and checking account info. For large payday loans, you may need to fax additional documents, such as pay stubs or bank statements. Sometimes you may find better rates with these lenders, so it pays to at least check out their rates. Besides online companies, you can go to a store front with your financial records and apply. An employee will make copies for the companys records. Receive Your Money Your application should only take minutes before you are approved. Your money will then be wired to your checking account if you use an online lender. Traditional payday companies will write a check to you, which you will have to cash at your bank. Pay Back Your Loan With online payday companies, you payment will automatically be deducted from your checking account. This payment will include the loans principal and finance fee. If you choose to roll over your loan for another pay period, you will have to pay the minimum finance fee. With traditional lenders, the postdated check you wrote during the application process will be cashed. If you want to delay full payment, you will need to go to the store to make arrangements. 7 Essential Appliance Repair Tips

By Michael Rad You can always find local authorized dealers or technicians that are able to repair home appliances such as air conditioners, microwaves, dishwashers, washing machines or refrigerators. Attempting to repair the malfunction yourself is not only time consuming but it is also dangerous, so make sure to contact an authorized technician when your home appliances are defective. However, some minor repairs can be carried out by anyone, provided that they follow some basic safety procedures. Here are some of the most useful appliance repair tips that are the same for trained technicians and untrained home owners. 1. Make sure to check whether the appliance still has a warranty. Most household appliances have warranties that become null when the device is opened outside authorized repair shops. 2. Try to determine the main reason why the appliance broke down and see if you need to replace any parts. 3. When diagnosing the appliance see if you can get a trained technician to help out. They will point out the defective parts quicker and will know from where to purchase the right type of spare part. 4. Safety is vital when it comes to repairs. Always switch off the appliance and make sure that it is unplugged. 5. Make sure to open the appliance in an area that provides you with good lighting and plenty of space to place the appliance cover, spare parts, tools. 6. If you are working on a heavy appliance make sure to get help if you need to lift it, otherwise you could get injured. 7. Make sure you have the right tools and documentation for your appliance. Appliance repair tools There are some very specific tools that are required to practice any profession, and when it comes to repairmen and technicians who deal with electrical appliances, the most important tool is the ohm/voltage meter. Ohm meters measure the resistance of appliances, which is a good measure of the functionality of an appliance.
